Recce

The recce sheet is part of the pre-production paper work. The purpose of a recce sheet is to make notes on the each location in which you choose to film at, you will photograph the plan view of the location and make notes on which areas of the location you will be using to film. Shooting information you will need to include is what particular equipment that you will need for the location like if its a public place and you're recording an interview then you'll need a microphone as such or even a H2 recorder so that you can hear the interviewees clearly. This also falls in line with the sound information. The lighting information is so that you can note down whether or not you will be needing any extra lighting in the film location, or if you need any reflectors. The power informations is noted because you may need power leads, chargers, batteries or even SD memory cards.

Photography Applications and Inspirational Photographers

Eve Arnold

Eve Arnold is a classic American photographer who started photographing in 1946. In 1951 Arnold first became associated with Magnum photos, and that lead to her becoming a full member in 1957. During the 1950's she was based in the US, but then relocated to England in 1962 to put her son through school. Although she had a six-year interval when she lived in the US and China she lived in the UK for the rest of her life. After being in China for so long Arnold finally had her first major solo exhibition; which was held in the Brooklyn Museum in 1980.

Later that same year she was awarded the National Book Award for In China and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers. As the years went by Arnold received many more honorable awards one of which, in 1995 she was made fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and elected Master Photographer - the world's most prestigious photographic honor - by New York's International Center of Photography. In January 2012 Eve Arnold sadly passed away at the age of 99 of natural causes, after the death a book was released in retrospect of her inspirational work.

If you look at the way Eve has photographed Marilyn Monroe you’ll notice that she looks like a very empowered woman, and you can tell she is known for her beauty. Eve has put black and white filter over the photograph which represents a seriousness and control but also enhances he femininity as a role model which will appeal to young girls who look up to Marilyn as a celebrity. You’ll also notice the way Marilyn is dressed which is very conservative and classy some would say business like, which shows a different side to Marilyn in which Eve was trying to achieve.

Robert Capa
1938 "The greatest war photographer in the world" was introduced as Robert Capa (Born Andre Friedmann to Jewish parents in Budapest in 1913) with 26 photographs from the Spanish Civil War, however Capa hated war.  In 1933 he was driven out of Berlin the country by the threat of the Nazi regime and ended settling in Paris. Capa was represented by Alliance Photo and met a journalist/photographer Gerda Taro that led to them both inventing the "famous" American Photographer Robert Capa and began to sell his prints in that name.

Capa went on to meet more famous people who too had been named famous for their work for instance Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and formed a fellow friendship with David 'Chim' Seymour and Henri Cartier-Bresson who are also Photographers. From 1936 and onwards Capa continued to photograph the Spanish Civil War regularly, His picture of a Loyalist soldier who had just been fatally wounded earned him his international reputation and became a powerful symbol of war.

If you look at the way the soldier in photograph is positioned you’ll notice that he looks as though he is going to collapse, as though his body has given up on the stress of the war and is pained by the reality around him. Capa has captured a grief-stricken moment and the soldier looks as the war has defeated him, which sends a very powerful moment and his audience will feel empathy for the soldier. If you notice the image is in back and white and this time is used in a different way to Eve Arnolds photograph of Marilyn Monroe; the filter creates a depressing and sadden mood, that is powerful.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was famous for his celebrity culture, artistic expression, and advertisement, which flourished in the 1960's. He became popular from his visual movement art, which is formally known as pop art. Andy was born August 6 1928, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He used many different techniques with his artwork such as photography, silk painting, sculpture etc.

He is also notable as a gay man who lived openly as such before the gay liberation movement. His studio, the factory, was a famous gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons.

Andy Warhol also photographed Marilyn Monroe but only the way he has photographed her sends a different message to the one that Eve Arnold had taken; the Marilyn is seen as more of a sex icon and less of a role model although she still looks beautiful, she isn’t shown as a powerful woman she is seen as someone completely different to the photograph Eve Arnold used. Andy uses her sexual magnetism as a form of art in which he knows will appeal to more men than woman however woman still would aspire to be like her in the sense of her beauty.

Risk Assessment

This is an example of a risk assessment. The reasoning behind the usage of a risk assessment is to make sure the filming location is safe for the staff working on the film. The risk assessments are part of the pre-production paper work in which has to be done before the filming begins so a production manager will have been sent out on location to see if the area is suitable for the filming and safe enough for the staff who is working on set. On the first page is has the name of the producer, director and location manager, it also has boxes for the more important things such as the production dates, location contact location, address and contacts this is in preparation for the filming dates.

Page two is a check list of things that need to be addressed for instance if there is any complications with any electrical items or if there is any violence/ public disorder that may interfere with the film making. The purpose for this sheet to be filled out before the filming begins is so that if there is any complications at the location it can be resolved safely and no body will be at risk.

Natural Photography-Evaluation

Photograph A
Photograph B

Photograph C
Photograph D

The focus on photograph A is focused only on the center of the flowers and the background is fairly blurred this is called image destabilization and it is used in photographs B, C, and D. The reason for the image destabilization is to enhance the brightness of the colours of the flowers and the leaves.

The lighting of each of the photographs are used only with natural lighting, no artificial lighting was involved, as it was unnecessary. Because I used image destabilization and natural lighting the brightness of the flowers are vivid and shown in great detail. There wasn’t very much darkness except the dark greens of the leaves and stems of the flowers which creates a contrast to help balance out the brightness of the petals.

If you were able to touch each photograph I'd imagine the texture would be soft like velvet and also very delicate, as when you think of a flower they usually are very delicate so I’d like to imagine that’s the way the flowers would feel like. The texture of the images would be able to create a calm, soothing mood in the audience.

If you look at the composition used in each photograph you’ll see that the rule of three is used which almost makes the photos look like an illusion and I think the effect of each photo makes an opening statement.  The look of the photographs look very similar to the Floral Landscapes by Ron Van Dongen because is uses the image destabilization and it also uses the same composition in which I was trying to capture in my work.

Achitechual Photography- Evaluation

Architectural Photography – Evaluation

The focus on the photographs above is very similar to each other; they focus mainly on the structure of the buildings.  In the photographs I tried to imitate the focus that is used in the work of Simon Kennedy who is famous for his architectural photography, which is too based in London. The structure of the buildings all have similar type of style which represents wealth which gives off an impression in which makes you think that there is some form of historical background. I wanted to capture the uniqueness of each of the buildings and show off the area in which they are built in which show what type of people live in the area.

The lighting of each photographs use only natural lighting which give the buildings a kind of greyish look. The grey tones are associated with a sense of seriousness and control; which gives off an impression that the life style of the people that live in the area of the buildings are business like. The colours of the buildings are all very similar as they are either a cream or a brick orange with black gates or some for of balcony and unique windows; which also sends a message of wealth and an idea of what the type of person who would live in those buildings are like and what their life styles would be like.

Each of the buildings have some sort of historical background to them for instance if you look at the photographs below you’ll notice it is a form of memorabilia of animals who lost their lives during the World war I and the World war II. Many tourists in which go to London will look at that and see that London may be a wealthy place but it is also known for many historical reasons and also may be a reason in which why it is so wealthy.

If you were able to feel the texture of the photographs id images that they would feel quite rough like sand paper or brick that has been eroded by the acid in the rain. It’s the same with Simon Kennedy’s work I think the texture of his work would feel the exact same way; this is because the buildings look new and sophisticated but they look like they have some stories behind them.

In the images I didn’t really use the rule of three however I did use a grid, which helped me position the camera in a way that would give me a sense of style, and so that you can clearly see the structure of the buildings and the buildings uniqueness.

Fashion Photography- Evaluation

The focus of the photographs with the model are clear which enhances the sharpness and shows each aspect of the props used in the background to create a sense of modern style yet it brings to your attention of what type of historical period the photographer was trying to mirror. The fairness of the models skin is made to look like a mannequin and the flash helps the look as it highlights the facial feature and the position of her body.

The cast of the shadow behind her body creates depth which enhances her curves which stands out in a controlled way without taking the attention away from the vintage props in the background. Some of the lines in the photo are straight in which makes the photograph look more structured, the machinery in the background impersonates the curves of the model and in a way allow a sense of femininity, strength and power. The use of the space in both images are cramped and cluttered which could represent her life messy but controlled.

The texture of the photographs would feel like suede its tough, soft but when you put water on it, it shrinks and the softness fades. Both images use the same tone and highlights if you look at the models face you'll see the the highlights are symmetrical; both of her cheeks are lighter than the the colour of her thighs.

When you look at the way the model is positioned  you'll notice the darkness of a shadow that outlines her curvaceous body which gives the photograph depth and a sense of style, the same method applies with the shadow of the chair on the being manipulated on the wall in the background. With all four of the photographs you'll notice that they all have the same tones and colours, almost similar to the sepia filter used in Ziegfeld Follies in his vintage fashion work in the 1920's, which is what I wanted to show in my work.

The composition you'll notice that the rule of three was initiated in each of the 4 photographs, it more noticeable in the second photograph of the male model, he isn't centred purposely to keep in line with which way the graffiti is positioned on the wall. Using the rule of three method in my photographs makes my work look more professional.

The lighting in the first two photographs are natural no artificial lights were used, however in the second two photos I used a reflector which enabled me to get a a drop shadow behind the model. The lighting in all the photographs help highlight certain  aspects of the models facial features and bodily figure.
